IN SITU (in place) ART
by OUT of PLACE ARTIST
A work in progress that began with questions about positioning, alienation, belonging, language and body. The work was built and revealed during a stay at a construction site, and a meeting with the crane operator and site manager.
Art functions as a mechanism that enables freedom and the breaking of boundaries and conventions. It builds bridges and connections, allowing me wanderings and playfulness within a serious and rigid world. The abstract definition of "art" or "artist" enabled me to enter and position myself within a place where I "don't belong" and to create encounters that are "out of place." At the end of the process, the invitation of the site and its workers into the artistic institution is an additional act of positioning that attempts to disrupt the taken-for-granted orders of belonging and alienation.
It was presented as part of a master's degree completion, as a six screens video installation and real-time conversation between myself and Khammar, the crane operator.
